Tempe Arizona Crossroads describes describes Tempe's economic progress through its nearly one hundred and twenty five year history as a community captured in two words: diversity and vision. Founder Charles Trumbull Hayden envisioned the agricultural potential of land south of the Salt River. Acting on that vision in 1870 he helped divert water to the fields and his vision became reality.

Hayden established a ferry crossing and trading post on the Salt River, southest of Phoenix. On the south banks of the river, Hayden also started a water-powered flour mill, a general merchandise store, a blacksmith and carpenter's shops. In establishing these fledgling Tempe businesses, Hayden set an example of economic diversity that has been intentionally followed by the city to this very day.

Within a decade after World War II, the population of Tempe had grown to nearly fourteen thousand and the forerunner of Arizona State University, Tempe Normal School had an enrollment of more than five thousand students and was on its way to becoming a full-fledged university. Agriculture was beginning to give way to new housing, business, and industry as veterans of World War II came to attend ASU or make permanent homes in the state where they had come for military training. New military and civilian industries flourished in the aerospace and electronics industries, attracted by the area’s climate and proximity of Arizona State University soon flourished.

In the 1970’s Tempe grew in size and annexed more land to support it’s growing population, educational institutions and businesses. Today, Arizona Crossroads notes that “Tempe has more than 150,000 people, a land area of 38.4 square miles and a university with an on campus enrollment of more than 45,000 students.”
