Homes for sale and real estate information in Scottsdale

The history of Scottsdale Arizona dates back to the old west and beyond. The city of Scottsdale was incorporated in 1951 but Scottsdale’s history dates back much farther. The first residents of Scottsdale are believed to be the Hohokam Indians who settled in the area around 800 A.D. The Hohokam Indians were farmers and one of their most notable achievements, many in use even today was that they built over 200 miles of canals for irrigation.

Considered to be the founding father of Scottsdale, Winfield Scott came to Arizona around 1888 purchasing 600 acres on the outskirts of Phoenix. He made the purchase through the Desert Land Act and was required to irrigate the land. Scott put down a deposit of fifty cents per acre for a section of land extending east from Scottsdale Road and Indian School Road to Hayden Road, north to Chaparral Road, west to Scottsdale Road, then south back to Indian School Road. He deeded that portion of the property north of the canal back to the government because he cannot irrigate it with water from the canal. The total cost of the property ended up being just three dollars and fifty cents an acre!
He then planted hundreds of citrus trees and sought to bring settlers to to this new Arizona city and called it Orangetown. In the 1890’s Orangetown became known as Scottsdale and officially was named Scottsdale in 1897 when the United States Post Office opened an office there.
