Glendale, Arizona was incorporated on June 18, 1910 but Glendale’s modern history began in 1883 when the Arizona Canal Company hired entrepreneur William J. Murphy to spearhead the building of a 44-mile-long canal from the Salt River to the barren Northeast Valley. A very ambitious project at the time, it took nearly two years to complete. The canal brought was a boon for agricultural and families flocked to the new community of Glendale.
Spurred on by the economic growth of the area, a flood of immigrants to the Glendale area began in the mid-1890s and forever changed the cultural and ethnic dynamics of the fledgling town. With the success of the canal project, William J. Murphy sought to create a railroad that would connect Glendale with other parts of the state. Once completed, the railroad had direct access to the forest areas of Northern Arizona, and the availability of lumber led to buildings springing up all over town.
Although Glendale was primarily colonized by Anglo Protestant farmers, settlers of different religious and ethnic backgrounds made their mark on the early development of Glendale. Residents of Hispanic origin were of great importance, as they helped construct the Arizona Canal and worked on ranches in the area. Their community, called "Sonorita," was located just south of downtown Glendale. Other immigrants contributed to the growth and prosperity of Glendale including Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Basques, and Middle Eastern immigrants. Each of these new residents, in their own ways and traditions have helped to enrich Glendale’s distinctive history.
Glendale experienced a major economic boost and period of prosperity as a result of the need for agriculture during World War I. Farmers were busy growing cantaloupes, watermelons, lettuce and cotton to support the war effort. Though the Depression hit Glendale farmers hard business was once again revitalized during and after World War II. Both Thunderbird Field and Luke Air Force Base were established in the years proceeding, during and after World War II bringing thousands of airmen and their families to Arizona.
Glendale grew rapidly in the decades after the war and experienced a tremendous population surge in the 1950’s and 1960’s. In 1961 the city annexed four square miles of the land south of Glendale city limits doubling Glendale’s population.
Since then, the city has increased from six square miles to nearly sixty square miles. Today Glendale is a truly metropolitan city that still recognizes its small town roots. Home to major educational, cultural and sporting venues, Glendale is one of the premier cities of the Valley of the Sun.
