Coldwell Banker home for sale and real estate information in Chandler
The modern history of Chandler started In 1891 when Dr. Alexander John Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon for the territory of Arizona, bought 80 acres of land from the federal government south of Mesa in the Salt River Valley. Dr. Chandler studied the relatively new science of irrigation engineering and was instrumental in building an early system of canals in what was then arid desert land.
On May 17, 1912, Dr. Chandler opened Chandler for business, selling real estate to potential residents and landowners. Excursion trains on the newly completed Arizona Eastern Railroad brought 300 speculators who spent $50,000 for land that day.
The town then consisted of three wooden shacks -- the town site office, a dining hall and the Morrison Grocery. There was also a billboard marking the site of the elegant future Hotel San Marcos. Dr. Chandler envisioned the city as a popular tourist and visitor destination.
In recent years, Chandler's borders have been expanded and the population has boomed -- from 30,000 in 1980 to about 220,000 today. The economic base of Chandler is very diversified. While agriculture is still a vital economic base, Chandler now enjoys a strong electronics and manufacturing sector.
Today, Chandler is a vibrant twenty-first century community surging in growth, hopes and ambition. With businesses relocating facilities and families relocating as well, Chandler, Arizona is recognized as one of the fastest growing communities in America.
