Ahwatukee has both a long and short history. Before and during the 1800s, Indians hunted and farmed this land now known as Ahwatukee. During the later part of the 1800’s miner’s worked many gold and silver mines. The area's first home was built for a dentist, Dr. Ames, in 1921. It was later purchased by Helen Brinton in 1935 and she named it, Ahwatukee, pronounced “Ah-wa-too-kee”, a Crow Indian word meaning 'House of Dreams'. It has been said that “this cozy area has all the warmth and charm of a small town blessed by the amenities of a big city”. Ahwatukee is blessed by a diverse population and multitude of housing options as well as many interesting places for visitors and neighbors to come together and enjoy the Arizona outdoors. Ahwatukee is one of the fastest growing communities in the Valley of the Sun. Today, the population is over 70,000 and is expected to rise to about 120,000 residents. Housing developments, schools, and shopping centers have sprung up quickly. A magnet area for fine homes and commercial centers, the residents of Ahwatukee can boast that they have the highest income per household in the valley. The Village of Ahwatukee Foothills is located within the Phoenix city limits and is recognized as one of the Phoenix urban villages. However, because of its distinct and strong identity, residents feel that it is a town in and of itself.

The Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce is one of the newest chamber of commerce’s in the Valley of the Sun. Founded in the summer of 1994 by a loyal group of Ahwatukee business people, the Ahwatukee Foothills chamber of Commerce has grown significantly in the past eight years. In its early history the Ahwatukee Chamber was primarily an all-volunteer organization with a limited agenda and sparse resources. Today, just ten years later, the chamber staff consists of a president and seven part-time positions. The Ahwatukee Foothills chamber has grown to become a very influential organization boasting over 500 members. The chamber offers many opportunities for business owners to volunteer, network and grow their businesses.

The mission of the chamber is to serve its members and the community of Ahwatukee, and to continue the prosperity of the Ahwatukee Foothills area. The chamber strives to supply leadership for improving the quality of life for all who live in Ahwatukee and to serve the business community as the voice of commerce.
